<image:caption>In areas of extreme poverty, there is little to no funding for professional training. Our program is designed to bridge this gap between education and employment by providing young people with the necessary skills to work and live independently. We provide access to a range of vocational courses, such as teaching and nursing, as well as scholarships for gifted individuals to study pharmacy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Empowering Women</image:title>
<image:caption>Patriarchal gender norms drive discrimination against women around the world, often excluding them from solutions to poverty. With access to education and employment, women can become more financially and socially independent. With this independence, women can choose to have smaller, healthier families, leading to more prosperous living for individuals and communities. With empowerment, women are better equipped to fulfill their potential, and decide their own future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Sustainable Model</image:title>
<image:caption>We see the need for professional training in areas of extreme poverty as a global issue. With our model, nothing would please us more than to become completely inessential to the communities in which we are working. Our intention is simply to give communities a kickstart in bridging the gap between education and employment, and provide the necessary tools for independent living. Independence through education should mean exactly that: an end to reliance on aid</image:caption>

<image:caption>In June 2009, Thomas Stewart visited Shelo for the first time, having heard about their work while volunteering for another charity in Uganda. Seeing their need for additional funding, Thomas set up The Shelo Orphanage Foundation in the UK to aid the construction of their own orphanage.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2010</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2010, mudslides killed 350 people, including 60 children, and buried three villages resulting in thousands becoming homeless. In response to this crisis, Shelo grew from 5 to 20 volunteers and accepted 300 children who were homeless or in child-headed households. That same year, Shelo received donations to aid the expansion of their community work, and renovation of the community centre. Construction was set to begin in 2011.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2012</image:title>
<image:caption>The charity’s full education programme started with all 300 children attending school. This was achieved by removing barriers to entry, and providing children with materials such as school books, pens, pencils, uniforms, and shoes. In June, another mudslide destroyed three villages, killing 18 people, further 70 people unaccounted for, 480 displaced. In December 2012, Shelo ran a Christmas meal initiative that delivered a meal to all of the homes supporting the 300 children enrolled in Shelo’s school program, with an estimated 1,800 meals provided.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2013, a trustee visit was arranged to meet with the committee, staff members and careers to discuss future work. 271 children attended primary school and 29 children attended secondary school (total 300), and lunch fees were paid for 20 children secondary school students, providing them with a nutritious meal each day they attended school. In December, the Christmas meal initiative ran again, with another estimated 1,800 meals provided to homes.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2014, the charity name changed to “The Shelo Foundation” and our Core Ethos and Objectives document was created. Unfortunately, the UK Charity did not have sufficient funding to continue supporting 300 children through primary school, and so support was reduced to 237 in primary school, and 63 in secondary school (300 total). Lunch fees were paid for the 63 secondary school students, providing them with a nutritious meal each day they attended school. In December, the Christmas meal initiative ran again, with another estimated 1,800 meals provided to homes</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2015</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2015, we launched three new initiatives. Firstly, the home nutrition programme, which began with 2,700kg of seeds for planting delivered to 300 households looking after children. Secondly, we created a child and home database, aiming to track the progress of each child through school, and create a record of the living situation for each child from 2015 onwards. Thirdly our female sanitation initiative. We were provided with 45 packs by Pauline Marshall from Selsey Women’s Institute, with each pack containing washable materials that allow the female student to comfortably attend school throughout her cycle. (Prior to this our female students often missed up to a week of school each month due to their periods). 212 children attended primary school and 88 children attended secondary school (total 300). Lunch fees were paid for the 88 secondary school students.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2016, the home nutrition programme continued, with a total of 2,700kg of seeds for planting delivered to 300 households looking after children, and each household receiving the same 4kg maize seeds and 5kg of bean seeds at the beginning of the year. The female sanitation packs acquired in 2015 were distributed to 90 of our female students who can now attend school uninterrupted as a result of this initiative. As the government subsidised primary school much more than secondary school, the fee for secondary education was much more expensive. As a result we gave priority to secondary school students as this is where we saw the greatest need. 164 children attended primary school and 83 children attended secondary school (total 247).</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2017</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2017, our home nutrition programme continued for the 168 homes of Shelo children still attending school. In total, 2,223kg of bean and maize seeds are delivered to these homes at the beginning of the year. This year, Shelo recruited a nurse, who was supplied with medications to treat common illnesses and infections in the OVCs we supported in line with government guidelines. 127 children attended primary school and 114 children attended secondary school (total 241).</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2018</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2018, the home nutrition programme continued and in total, 1,416kg of bean and maize seeds were delivered to the 168 homes at the beginning of the year. Thanks to the nurse recruited in 2017, Shelo children were able to receive treatment throughout the year against infectious diseases such as pneumonia and malaria. Another improvement was seen in our return to paying school fees for secondary students. 111 children attended primary school and 125 children attended secondary school (total 236). Lunch fees were paid for the 125 secondary school students, providing them with a nutritious meal each day they attended school</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2023, we were delighted to return to Bududa and spend some quality time with our students. With Brenda, our Head of Pastoral Care, and Justine, our Head of Education, we set about assessing our challenges and successes so far, and making further plans and improvements in our programme for the future. A crucial part of this trip was to spend time with the course leaders at BLC, to witness our student experiences first-hand, to speak with their teachers, and to understand a real day in the life of a Path To Prosper student. A major highlight of the trip was celebrating Nashimolo Joel’s graduation from his pharmacy diploma in Kampala University. Together with Brenda, Justine, and Joel’s foster mother, we travelled across the country together for this momentous occasion in Joel’s life. He has now secured work as pharmacist in a town near to Bududa, and we have also invited him to join the Board of Trustees at Path To Prosper.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Students - Wenwa Geofrey - Early life & education</image:title>
<image:caption>Geofrey has been in education with Shelo since 2013 when he was 12 years old. Since he started at Bududa Primary School, he’s always been a hard working student finishing primary school in 2014 and then moving on to secondary education. Geofrey lived with 8 siblings and his mother, who is 48 years old. He is the 6th child in the family. Their mud house has 4 rooms and a metal sheet roof, and Geofrey shares a room with his brothers. The family grows crops like cassava, sweet potatoes, eggplant, beans and bananas as their source of income. They also look after a goat. The family is able to eat three times a day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Eunice began her tailoring course at BLC in early 2025. Coming from a single-parent family with five children, her family was unable to support her education beyond the primary level and her days the last few years have been supporting around the home. She has always been a caring and happy individual, with an ambition to make clothes and earn a living to support her mother. <image:caption>Tom enrolled onto his course supported by Path to Prosper in early 2025. He and his family live in the parish of Bufutsa in Bududa, in a 5 room home housing 4 adults and 9 children. Through passing his schooling successfully he was always noted as a bright and happy student. However since his father fell ill and unable to work, the education for all the children was cut short. Due to illness in the family he sees the importance of proper medical skills and is undertaking a diploma course studying nursing at Mount Elgon. His aims are to open his own practice within Bududa and improve the lives of his community. We are incredibly proud to support Ben through his nursing diploma and we will update this page with more photos / stories as he progresses.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2021 Isaac was one of the first students to enroll in the new Path To Prosper programme. He’s chosen to take a mechanics course at BLC, and although the school is an hour and a half walk, he’s expressed his excitement in taking part of this opportunity. We receive monthly reports on Issac's well-being and education. Through all of his school reports he showed great aptitude in his practical classes particularly. As part of the Path to Prosper support we supplied him with all the tools he needed to make the most of the education and meant he was able to practice in his own time in the schools mechanics shop. He will keep these tools after he graduates and it will enable Issac to get started earing money quickly. Part of his course included industrial training, which Issac took part in and developed brilliant contacts in the local community. Issac graduated in 2022 with a grade of B+ in Motor Vehicle Mechanic Occupation, with a pass in industry training module. He was thrilled and we wish him all the best in his next steps!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Joshua grew up with his mother and 6 siblings. The family earned a living by digging for other people in the community. They also grow crops like beans and cocoyam in their small piece of land for family food. Most often, the family could only afford to eat once a day and couldn’t afford school fees for all 6 children. Thanks to your support, Joshua has been in education with Shelo since he was 10 years old. Starting at Bunabumibi Primary School, he has always been a hard working student. He also attended Bududa Comprehensive High School studying History, Commerce, Mathematics, Agriculture and Sciences; getting his highest grades in Geography and Chemistry.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2021, Joshua was chosen to be one of the first students to be part of the new initiative with Path to Prosper. He chose to take a mechanics course at the local vocational college. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the family’s financial situation worsened and Joshua had to take on a night job. He attended college by day and at night he worked at the local police station in order to get a little money for his family. Joshua is back to studying full time and we are delighted that Joshua wants to upgrade his mechanics course and be part of Path To Prosper for the next two years.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Students - Nashimolo Joel - Early life & education</image:title>
<image:caption>With nowhere to live after the death of both of his parents, Joel lived on the street, going from house to house every night looking for shelter. It was at this time of crisis when he came under the care of the Shelo Foundation. Through the support of Shelo, Joel received counselling and education. He finished primary and secondary education in the top set for all his classes at school. After gaining 10 O-levels his dream of a career in science and being able to give back to the Bududa community began to feel possible. Joel hopes that through education, employment and independence he will be able to help other children in need, like he once was, in the future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Students - Nashimolo Joel - Joel’s professional education with Path To Prosper</image:title>
<image:caption>Joel was one of the first students to join the Path To Prosper programme. After finishing secondary school in 2017, Joel continued to live in his hometown of Bududa without the resources to turn his education into employment. He spent this time teaching younger children in the community about science. In 2019, with the support of a Shelo sponsorship, Joel's dream of going to university came true and he was accepted into Kampala International University to study pharmacy. He is now working locally as Pharmacist and has been invited to join our team of volunteers as a Trustee Advisor.</image:caption>
